This is my third year of doing the challenge.   I learn lots each time and enjoy the two weeks very much.   I have many more  hallenges I would like to do in future years.   I also am glad to know how many environmentally supportive groups we have in o ur communities.  I look forward to participating more in some of them.  Thanks to Sustainable Wenatchee for supporting and organizing this Challenge!   Thanks to the organizers and to my teammates!

I have learned lots this Challenge!   I pushed myself into some healthier habits.   I want to keep doing this Challenge in future years as I have lots more to learn and experience.   I found actions that helped my body, mind, and soul.   I hope to maintain the healthiest actions as habits into the future.   Now, on to my second day of watercolor class!

I met some new people at the Green Drinks event in Leavenworth yesterday afternoon.   Then I went to my last Landscape Design class.  I finished my landscape drawing but have not finalized my planting list yet.  Today, I am emptying my walk-in closet so it can be painted.  This comes at a good time, as my last one time challenge is to donate unwanted items.   I will use today and the weekend to go through clothes, shoes, purses, bedding, etc. and make piles for YWCA donation and the CUUF yard sale and complete a big action item!

I ordered mesh produce bags and collapsible silicone food containers from Amazon Smile with a donation to CUUF. They arrived yesterday.    I will start using them immediately, for produce shopping and taking leftovers home from area restaurants. Part of my fight to eliminate single use plastics.  I will also attend the green drinks session in Leavenworth this afternoon.

Yesterday I put together my emergency kit (briefcase, checklist, overnight bag, etc.).   I know where everything is so I can “grab and go” if I need to evacuate for any reason.   I know my alternative evacuation routes out of my neighborhood.   Getting my updated information in my briefcase was a good exercise.  I needed to do that anyway.

I hosted a gathering of friends yesterday afternoon to watch a documentary called “Why Buying Plastic-free Groceries Is So Hard”.   Afterwards we discussed plastics—which ones were toxic, which ones were not recyclable, and how to reduce single use plastics in our lives.   It seems daunting, but we can each do our parts.  Talking with stores and restaurants about our desires to be plastic free is important.  We must speak up!

Standing my cut herbs in water on my kitchen counter makes them last longer.  They also give me some splashes of green in the kitchen and entice me to use them in my cooking.   Yesterday morning I made a pot of Italian vegetable beef soup, adding fresh chopped basil from my bouquet.   I find that soup is a great way to zero waste food by using the last of the old veggies, leftovers, and the tops of celery bunches.  Homemade soup is also a great way to get a Whole Foods meal in minutes throughout the week!

This morning I have been reading about the Nature Conservancy’s preserves in Washington, and focusing in on the Moses Coulee.   I have been a member of TNC for years and support the great work they do in conserving important landscapes across the world!   I learned more about the species they work to protect in the Moses Coulee and in Washington.   I will continue to support their conservation mission!
