Tonya Doughty 5/16/2019 2:40 PMTraveling today, so no hiking. But I brought one of my art journals to doodle in so I wouldn't spend my layover on the phone or tablet.-

Tonya Doughty 5/14/2019 11:32 AMFound an awesome app that lets money be donated by participating organizations to a charity of your choice (they have lots to choose from) based on your active miles (walking, biking, hiking). You're already doing the work, so you might as well let those miles do extra work in your name for a good cause. I am supporting the Chron's & Colitis Foundation of America. The app is Charity Miles and is available for both Android and Apple platforms. This was from this morning's hike.

Tonya Doughty 5/13/2019 10:40 AMDoing a little "CITO" this morning. CITO is "Cache In, Trash Out" and performed by players of Geocache. Although it's a little irritating that there is garbage on the trails to pick up in the first place. This was less than a half mile from the start/end of the very well maintained Saddlerock trailhead -- stocked with lots of emptied-every-day trash cans. No real excuse for whomever is leaving this stuff.

Tonya Doughty 5/12/2019 10:14 PMHid my 25th Geocache on my hike this morning. Such a fun reason to get out, and encourage others to. Don't know what geocaching is? Check out Geocache.com -

Tonya Doughty 5/09/2019 11:59 AMSomething I learned hiking today: these are not berries or fruit. I see them all the time on sagebrush and, curious, because I didn't know sagebrush grew a fruit/berry, I picked one. Once home I got on Google and learned the truth. An insect called the Sponge Gall Midge, a tiny delicate fly, lays it's eggs on the sagebrush leaves. The larvae eat the leaves and their saliva causes the plant to deform, swelling around the developing insect. This growth is called a Gall. And it can get even more bizarre. There are even tinier wasps, that sometimes deposit their eggs inside the Midge fly larvae that is inside the Gall, using their "ovipositor". Their larvae will devour the fly larvae and instead of a Midge fly emerging, a parasitoid wasp will. Nature is crazy! Get out and get it. And don't try to eat the sage "berries!"

Tonya Doughty 5/07/2019 3:44 PMThis plant, when blooming, smells strongly of cinnamon, specifically, "Big Red" chewing gum. It stops me in my tracks, the smell is so strong. I HAD to find out what it was. Spent a bit of time and, thanks to the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, identified it as "Bitterbrush" Purshia tridentata. Info can be found on the CDLT site here. -
Tonya Doughty 5/06/2019 12:09 PMSo far, so good. Thanks Sarah, for the invite! Here's where I spent my morning before work:
