Well..learned alot about furnaces last night, and the importance of keeping your drain line unclogged.   Otherwise...water backs up.  Good to know.

I attended the poetry workshop at the Leavenworth Bird Fest yesterday morning.  This was way out of my comfort zone to say the least.  I haven't written a poem since Junior High.  The instructor asked what about a bird, or birds, could we tell the group about, then write a poem about.  I met some birders in the workshop from Berkeley CA and also from the East Coast.  They talked about how the changing climate has changed the birds they are seeing and observing.  The woman from Berkeley hasn't had birds to her feeders for several years, she told the group with tears in her eyes.

I talked about the owls in our neighborhood, and thought I'd share the poem i wrote about the owl in our neighborhood that I listen to at night.

    "Call and Response"

    Distant, yet close
The crisp air carries your voice.
    The quiet night
    is your playground.
    Hoo, hoo...hoo.....
    Hoo, hoo...hoo.....

    I listen to your call,
Waiting to hear the answer from your mate.
    Call and response.
    Call and response.
    Hoo, hoo...hoo.....
    Hoo, hoo...hoo.....

I imagine your shape, your form, your span
I feel the hair on my neck on end,
    Watching and feeling your flight.
I ask others, did you hear? Did you see?

Your call in the crisp air of winter.
    My response-
    Waiting,
    listening,
    Anticipating.

    It is in me.
    It is in you.
The call and response of a poem.
    Hoo, hoo...hoo.....
    Hoo, hoo...hoo.....

Did exercise by lifting whiskey barrels in the garden, shoveling, and planting bee friendly perennials, zucchini, salvia.  Just saw another bat.

  • Julie Smith 5/20/2018 9:51 PM

  • Julie Smith 5/20/2018 8:15 PM

We got the latest National Geographic delivered this week.  They have changed their packaging from plastic to more eco-friendly.  This issue is about plastics and our planet...we invited it, we depend upon it, we are drowning in it.  Great article.  Only 9% of plastics in the US are currently recycled.  9%.
